Questions asked about the Deer and Goose Story that need to be answered.

I felt that it was important that some of the most common questions had to be answered about the current Deer and Goose Stroy.

1.  If your company is suppose to chase the deer out of the cemetery how come you are leaving this one.

answer:   Once the goose was found and the relationship that appeared to be happening between the Deer and the Goose I brought it to the attention of Forest Lawn.  We all agreed that this was somethig special and we wanted to share this "bonding" experience.  Nobody really had any idea this story was going to get as big as it did.   I thought Andy Parker would show the picture on tv, just to show that Spring is right around the corner.

2.  How far out to you provide your service and do you franchise your business.

answer:   We generally try to stay inside Erie County, New York.  We will consider other properties outside of Erie County depending on the distance.   At this time we are not  considering franchising.  But we will notify the people that have inquired should this change.

3.  I heard that you were chasing the geese with a net and trying to relocate the goose.  Why are you doing this?

answer:   We have never chased any of the geese with any nets and we do not relocate the geese.  We use Border Collies which represent a predator thatthe geese fear.  The dogs never hurt the geese "EVER".    To try and relocate a Canada Goose is not possible.  They are imprinters and will always return to the place that they were born.

4.  Were you feeding the deer or goose to get them to stand next to each other?

answer:  Neither the deer nor the goose was feed nor was there any evidence of anyone else feeding them.   This is also another reason why this story is unique.  We really have not explanation why they are doing what they are doing but if though the deer leaves for a few hours each day he always comes back to the same spot.

Tonawanda Uses Border Collies to Keep Down Canada Geese
One good goose story deserves another.

Recently, eNewsline ran an article on a nesting Canada Goose at the Baltimore Transmission parking lot that was causing some problems for employees who had the nerve to try to park near her nest.

Not to be outdone, Tom Mayer, Worldwide Facilities Group at Tonawanda, forwarded an article about his plant’s efforts to humanely keep Canada Geese from making the plant grounds their home.

Tonawanda is using Border Collies to discourage the geese from setting up housekeeping there. Read an article below from the plant newsletter that explains more.

Is Tonawanda Going to the Dogs?
Certainly not! But you may see some Border Collies periodically patrolling the front entry lawns of both plant 1 & 5 in the near future.

Canada Geese, who have nested on Strawberry and Motor Island, have developed a fondness to the lawn areas of plants 1 & 5. Measures taken last year by the plant were not effective at discouraging the geese. Inquiries into more effective solutions and discussions with the local office of the New York State DEC’s and their experience with various wildlife management strategies, identified that the use of Border Collies has proven to be one of the more effective measures in providing a long-term solution. Hence, Tonawanda will begin utilizing a local company, Borders on Patrol.

This local company utilizes trained Border Collies at random times throughout the day, to chase away the part time resident geese. Border Collies are recommended by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, PETA and The Humane Society to solve Canada Geese problems humanely and effectively, and are used at many Parks, Ball Fields, Nursing Homes & Golf Courses locally.

The Canada Goose is a protected species with fines that can cost thousands of dollars if you kill or injure one. The Borders on Patrol Collies are highly-trained and will NEVER harm or injure the geese. The dogs will be on site several times a day through the Geese natural molting season. During this time, the Border Collies will herd the geese away and establish a natural fear in them that will discourage their return.
